About Me – Why I’m Passionate About Solo Travel

Hi there! I’m Alex Wood, the solo traveler behind SoloTravelTips.net a site built for anyone who’s ever dreamed of exploring the world alone but wasn’t sure where to start.

Five years ago, I booked a one-way ticket to Thailand with nothing but a backpack, a shaky confidence, and a deep desire to break free from the routine. That trip changed everything. Since then, I’ve traveled solo across 18 countries from hiking in the mountains of Nepal to sipping coffee in a quiet Lisbon café, all on my own terms.

My Solo Travel Journey

My first solo trip was terrifying. I remember standing in Bangkok airport, overwhelmed, wondering if I’d made a huge mistake. But within days, I met fellow travelers, navigated a foreign city, and realized something powerful: I was capable of more than I ever imagined.

Over the years, I’ve taken weekend trips to nearby cities, backpacked through Southeast Asia, road-tripped across New Zealand, and even spent a month living in a tiny village in Portugal. Each journey taught me something new about the world, about people, and most importantly, about myself.

Solo travel isn’t just about seeing new places. It’s about freedom, self-reliance, and growth. It’s learning to trust your instincts, solve problems on the fly, and embrace the unexpected.

Why I Created This Site

After returning home, I kept hearing the same thing from friends and strangers: “I’d love to travel alone, but I’m scared.”

I get it. The idea of flying to a foreign country with no one by your side can feel intimidating. Where do you stay? Is it safe? What if something goes wrong?

That’s why I started SoloTravelTips.net to give beginners a clear, honest, and practical guide to solo travel. No fluff. No fear-mongering. Just real advice from someone who’s been there, messed up, figured it out, and came back wiser.

My mission? To make solo travel accessible, safe, and exciting for everyone whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned explorer looking for smarter ways to travel.

Why Trust My Advice?

You don’t need to be an influencer or a full-time digital nomad to give good travel advice. You just need real experience.

  • ✅ I’ve traveled solo in over 18 countries  on a budget and in luxury.
  • ✅ I’ve stayed in hostels, homestays, and remote cabins  and know what works.
  • ✅ I’ve tested dozens of travel apps, backpacks, and safety tools  so you don’t have to waste money.
  • ✅ I’m transparent: If I recommend something, it’s because I’ve used it and trust it. And if I earn a small commission through affiliate links, I’ll always tell you.

This site is built on honesty, experience, and a genuine love for solo adventures  nothing more, nothing less.
